Description
The monument can be climbed though an inner stairwell of 311 steps to give great views of London, it marks the place in Pudding Lane (at a bakers) where the Great Fire of London started in 1666, devastating much of the city. Some say as much as 80% of London was destroyed due to timber being the main construction material. Luckily only 6 people died. Surveyor General Christopher Wren rebuilt the churches of London and St Paul's Cathedral giving us the London of today. The great fire ended the bubonic plague that had ravaged the city - spread by rats carrying fleas infected with the bacteria Yersinia pestis
