Description
Looking at Cornhill with the Royal Exchange to the left. Cornill is at the nucleus of the traditional City of London - going back to the Roman city of Londinium that was built on 3 hills - Cornhill, Tower Hill and Ludgate Hill upon which stands St Paul's. Cornhill is one of 25 City of London wards and is a centre for optics, telescopes and microscopes. A statue of the civil engineer James Henry Greathead (1844-1896, seen in the photograph) was recently erected in 1994 to honour his work in the engineering of the London underground. The Royal Exchange was built in the 16th century as a centre for commerce, it was the original home for Lloyds insurance.
